Here are some testaments from Elders in the Woods.
We both benefit from the friendship and fun in meeting others, having conversations about our lives in the past and present and finding points of common interest. We have both benefitted from learning some new skills,
I think particularly seeing the evolution of the pit kiln in the field. We had both dabbled in pottery or clay work in the past and relished the opportunity to have another go! Using Tamlin’s knowledge and expertise at the basic firing processes and seeing the results of our modest efforts was sheer joy! Just having those afternoons in the woods in fresh air, in all weathers, is so very beneficial. It frees our minds, we detach ourselves from our everyday lives at home and just relax in those beautiful woods. I truly value the chance that Andrew has to converse with others and regain a little independence in a warm and welcoming environment. I myself relish the opportunity to meet and converse with others, detached from our normal home environment. So I cannot stress enough how Elders Forest Schools has been a true lifeline for us and we hope that it will continue into the future
The best time for me in Kaliwoods were the last four weeks of year. The reason being self discovery through making and firing pottery on the kaliwoods site. The fire was created in the field near the pond. I had the privilidge of helping, in a small way, to line it with bricks. Clay was dug and prepared by Tamlin, the potter.
I found that could easily find images in the clay and bring them into being. I was given the opportunity to take clay home with me and have produced a variety of pieces including elephants, dolphins, birds and reptiles. What is wonderful is seeing the figures emerge from the clay.
I have explored various arts and crafts but using clay is the most revealing and intuitive art form I have discovered. I hope there will be more opportunities to continue creating and firing clay work in the future.
The elders project benefits the community because it brings people together and offers new experiences which may otherwise not be available to many.
It is a it like being in the guides, gathering outside sharing stories and food round the fire and engaging in various activities which enhance and expand our abilities.

I loved Beltane with dancing the Maypole and jumping the fire. It made me feel alive and connected to myself and to Nature and the people around.
I occasionally contribute poems on a particular theme which let me share something I enjoy and value and hope others will enjoy the poems too.
Coming together and knowing how others enjoy doing things forms bonds that create connectedness to each other and to the land which sustains us.
How would you describe Elders to a stranger? A group of people who have much life experience and are willing to be themselves, enjoy being together and enjoy the benefits of the land.
