A glorious return, and welcome
A fascinating dive into Squash led by Marion, telling us some of her history and that of the squash, naming them, and singing their praises.
Nicky is writing up the notes but here are some photographs. We began the collection of flowers and pressing them. More of this the next time.
Thankyou Marion
Nicky’s squashy notes
Our first day back after summer, we noticed changes in the woods now the season is
changing again and landed in silence listening to the wind in the trees and the birds.
We were fortunate to have with us Marion Gaze, on her birthday, our very own
Cucubita petologist, to share her Squash expertise, as we feasted on roasted
Squash and courgette fritters, grown in the community garden. We were inspired by
the many varieties of squash, their beautiful forms and colours, the Turks turban,
butternut, green and red kuri and okaido. Their nutritional content loaded with vitamin
A and protein and Beta carotene, great for adults and babies alike! We learned how
the time of the frosts has altered the growing season and how best to harvest
squash, cutting carefully to leave some stalk so as the squash will not rot and keep
for longer. People shared their cooking ideas and a presentation of Cinderella soup!
Soften the skins by gentle cooking, roasting slices with salt and pepper seasoning.
We then walked through the land to the community garden where Marion was
harvesting more beautiful squash and gathered flowers along the way to press back
at camp, documenting the seasonal plants of the Autumn equinox.
We decided to put on our best pumpkin and squash colours and outfits for next
week in celebration of this most illustrious vegetable… we will arrive with squash
artwork and recipes for our next gathering in Kali wood, and hopefully also collect
some new elders to join us!
